Exercising Historical Imagination:
Civil War Letters
Unit
Project #2 requires students to role play assigned historic
figures and write about their experiences.
In
class on February 11 or 12, you will receive a photo frame
containing a replica of an historic photo. You will be assigned to play the
role of one of the people pictured. Your assignment is to write
a set of 3 letters from the perspective of the person pictured in
the photo frame. The goal is for you to imagine what life would
have been like during the unfolding events of the Civil War.
You
will begin writing your letters in class on February 11 or 12, and will begin writing the remaining letters in class on February 18 or 19 and February 23 or 24. On February 25 or 26 you will submit your completed letters.
Letters
must be imaginative but they must also be historically accurate
and reflect events occuring at the time of the Civil War.
To
assist you in writing your letters, you may wish to read some
real letters written during the Civil War. Visit the web site
called the Valley
of the Shadow which presents letters from supporters of
the Union and supporters of the Confederacy from all years during
the war.
